Abstract

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety is funding different projects for the optimisation of energetic use of biomass. In times of increased costs for renewable resources the cooperative project “Comparative investigations of large-scale biogas reactors – Procedural, microbiological, ecological and economic assessment and optimisation” has the task to optimise biogas plants using residual and waste materials in a sustainable way. Following the principle of circuitry of materials digestates shall be re-applied to production sites. For an ideal plant nutrition and conservation of ecosystems close to digestate treated production sites our sub-project intends to gain knowledge about the amount of substances applied to the soil by digestates and their bioavailability. Hence, nutrient and contaminant concentrations of digestates are analysed. Subsequent incubation experiments with typical agricultural soils are conducted. Carbon dioxide emission will be measured by an installation for soil respiration, and release of nutrients and contaminants will be investigated using exchanger materials. δ13C analysis shall identify the source of emitted carbon dioxide and give thus information about possible priming effects by digestates. In addition plant pot experiments are planned to determine directly the bioavailability of nutrients in digestates.
